Bellyfit Bellydance Classes and Workshops

Bellyfit Students End of Year Performance What happens in a Bellyfit bellydance class?
The emphasis in my classes is on having fun and enjoying getting fit in a relaxed and safe environment. My classes are quite structured. We always start with a warm up which includes movement around the room and body isolation exercises. I usually then have a shimmy period followed by stretching (the muscles need to be warm to ensure safe and effective stretching). We then learn some new moves, practise them and then put them into a simple, fun routine. We end with a cool down and stretching.

What do I wear to a bellydance class?
Fitted clothing is best for your safety. It helps me to make sure you are doing the moves safely. Bottom half: Leggings, shorts, fitted dance pants or track pants Top half: Fitted top, singlet top, crop top. Feet: bare feet, socks, flat ballet shoes, jazz shoes. A coin belt or hip scarf to tie around the hips.

What if I can't dance and have two left feet?
When I first started belly dancing (about six years ago) I was petrified of dancing and was convinced I did not have a coordinated bone in my body. So if I can do it - you can too!!! You do not need to be coordinated to come to class - all of the moves are broken down and with practise you will improve. Ask questions if you are struggling and we'll work it out together.

Am I too old to bellydance?
My answer would be no. I have taught women whose ages ranged from teens to women in their 70's. So go for it - have fun!

What if I have an injury?
The first thing to do is let me know at the beginning of the class so that I can be aware of any problem areas. I always tell my students that it is really important to listen to their bodies. If it hurts to do a particular move, always stop and let me know. It could be that your body is saying - 'I’m not ready to do that move' so then we will modify it (i.e. make it smaller) or it may be that you are physically unable to do the move so then I will change it or modify it to a movement you can do. I ask students to take care of themselves and just do what they feel capable of doing.

What if I'm late to the class?
Please do try and be on time - the warm up is a really important part of the class as you are safely preparing your body for the exercises to come. You will need to do your own warm up and stretches at the back of the room and then join the class.

Can I come to classes as I only understand a bit of English?
Definitely yes. Research has shown that a really effective way of teaching is to demonstrate the move and then get the students to copy the move (which requires no verbal instructions). I've often observed that too many instructions confuse students. However, I do give verbal instructions as well as ‘copy me examples’ and will always come around and give some help to those needing it.
